Mathematics is taught daily at Avon House Preparatory School. Once a week, there is a dedicated lesson devoted to developing pupil’s investigating, problem solving and reasoning skills. This allows pupils the opportunity to explore mathematics for themselves, by drawing on their knowledge of the subject and making connections between different mathematical processes.
Outside of their mathematics lessons, the pupils have weekly reasoning lessons where they can further practise their shape, space and sequencing skills. Verbal reasoning activities also introduce children to algebra from Year 3.
When pupils reach Year 5, they begin to participate in the annual Primary Maths Challenge. There is also an inter-house maths competition that takes place in the spring term. Those who are successful in these competitions go on to represent Avon House Preparatory School at area heats and beyond.
