On Wednesday, the newly appointed members of the RRS (Rights Respecting Schools) Council visited the Houses of Parliament, the seat of democracy in the UK, with the mission to discover more about how they can make their voices heard and ensure that they achieve their rights.
Starting in the Palace of Westminster where Queen Elizabeth II had lain in state for members of the public to pay their respects, the RRS Council toured inside the House of Commons, saw where the Prime Minister sits and found out how parliamentary sessions are run. They then moved onto the House of Lords and admired the artwork and architecture.
After lunch, they met their local MP, The Rt Hon Sir Iain Duncan-Smith and had the opportunity to put their well thought out questions to him, before he rushed off to another government meeting!
Sophie said, “It was really an honour to be inside this building.”
For Easton, he found it meaningful to stand where greats such as Nelson Mandela had previously stood to deliver his speech to the House of Commons.
What a fantastic start to the year for this keen group of RRS Council members!
