Strings Club Visit to The Barbican

Posted: 18th November 2024

On Thursday, Strings Club travelled to the Barbican to watch the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) perform Gustav Holst’s ‘The Planets.’ This is a seven-movement suite and each movement is named after a planet in the Solar System and its astrological character.

The movements are:

Mars, the Bringer of War

Venus, the Bringer of Peace

Mercury, the Winged Messenger

Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity

Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age

Uranus, the Magician

Neptune, the Mystic

The LSO presented ‘The Planets’ in a fun and educational way. The children were given the opportunity to clap rhythms, sing and use actions to accompany tunes. It was very inspiring to see professional musicians at work, using the same bowing, as well as watching the discipline they bring to the music. 2024 also happens to celebrate 150 years since Holst was born!

Imogen (6JM) says, “It was very fun and interesting to watch the professional orchestra play the music. I will now try to do the correct bowing when I play because it looks neater when everyone does the same.”
