Diversity Day

Posted: 18th October 2024

Avon House looked amazing on Thursday as we celebrated Diversity Day with pupils and staff invited to attend school in cultural outfits. From Indian saris, cork hats and Japanese kimonos to Cypriot traditional dress, thawbs and Scottish kilts, there were many colourful and interesting outfits across the Prep, EYFS and Pre-Prep. It was wonderful to hear everyone talk confidently about their ensemble and share details of their outfits.

Diversity Day is celebrated to recognise the rich tapestry of Avon House, of the similarities and differences of the people around us and how cultures, backgrounds, and traditions can be shared within the Avon House community. During the afternoon, each year group looked at a different country, learnt about how children are educated and some customs, traditions and how they differ to our own.

Jia, head of Diversity Council, addressed the hall to welcome everyone and open our 2024 Community Celebration Evening. The atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming as staff enjoyed catching up with current parents and several past pupils and parents as they visited to support us.

This is the second year we have celebrated Diversity Day, and the hotly anticipated evening food tasting and entertainment event returned even bigger than last. With over 150 people visiting the hall, visitors were treated to performances from the Avon House Choir and past pupils (and parent!) on the dholak, Indian and Russian dancing, a poetry quartet reciting Maya Angelou’s ‘Still I Rise’ and a display of work, including the Y2/Y6 quilt and the stunning and very large, whole school ‘Diverse World’ art piece from the workshops last week.

The food variety was as outstanding as last year; Welsh cakes, samosas, pakoras, onion bhaji, donuts, fresh bread, gulag jamun, ginger cakes, plantain crisps, many different types of curries from across the world, jollif rice, Anzac biscuits, dahl, murukku and much more were available to sample!

Thank you to all our families and staff who brought in food to share, the event wouldn’t be possible without all the support and time given.

Mr Babra (Head of Humanities) thoroughly enjoyed the evening and spoke passionately about it after, “I’m still buzzing with excitement about the event, I’m loving that so many people dressed up! The support was amazing and the children’s were outstanding, we have so many talented pupils! What a divine, diverse community, and indeed, family we are. Watch out for next years event!”
